Why Sizing Matters For Positions Boxes

Getting the right size for your dog's equipment is one of the most important decisions you'll make as a pet owner. Whether you're shopping for a collar, harness, bed, or crate, proper sizing ensures comfort, safety, and longevity. Let's explore how to measure your dog correctly and choose equipment that fits just right.

Why Sizing Matters

Ill-fitting positions boxes can cause discomfort, restrict movement, and even pose safety risks. A positions box that's too small can cause discomfort or dampen the dogs drive and desire to work with the equipment as they find it uncomfortable - kind of like you trying to run in trainers too small for you, you don't want to do it! Taking time to get the sizing right means your dog stays comfortable and safe.

How to Measure Your Dog

Start by gathering together your dog, a large towel and a tape measure. Lay your towel out on flat stable ground measured to the internal measurements of the positions box you think would best fit your dog. Position your dog as square as possible on the towel with their paws at the front of the towel, but not over the edge if possible - this helps replicate the vision of your dog being 'within' the positions box.

If your dog's legs splay out or they struggle to lay down fully square try to help them by placing their hips and paws more in line as much as possible - this will give a clearer view to you of the width of the box needed to help offer them guidance to learn to have squarer and more balanced movements. There should be a small amount of space either side to ensure they will not be squashed into the box.

Similarly ensure their hip joint is within the towel - this ensures the positions box offers the rear end guidance and support for precise positions rather than the back end hanging out and having no support to build square positions. This can lead to sloppy positions as there is no guidance for your dogs rear end.

Room for Growth

If you have a puppy, consider that they'll grow quickly. Buying in mind of their fully grown size will help provide you longevity of the product although there will be a potential lack of guidance during the growing stage depending on how old they are when you consider buying a positions box.

Proper sizing is an investment in your dog's training and their wellbeing. Take accurate measurements, consult size guides carefully, and don't hesitate to reach out to us to produce something just for your dog if you're between sizes.
